Gainesville Music Therapy

              Using Music to Change Lives

SPOTLIGHT:

What Happens in Child-Centered Music Therapy?

At Gainesville Music Therapy, the therapy room is a place for music-making.  During the session, the child is offered a  variety of instruments and musical styles in which to participate in the music.  Through the process of making music, the child works towards their individual goals and objectives.

Although the therapist directs the outline of the session, much of the music starts with the child’s spontaneous expression.  Client and therapist create music    together!  For example, a child’s mention of “popcorn” may lead into an improvised blues song about “pop, pop, popcorn!”  The in-the-moment nature of this song brings the child into relationship with the therapist— building relatedness with his/her environment.

An interactive call and response  section to the song builds language and communication skills as well as developing socialization skills through turn-taking.

Finally, the child’s steady beating of the drum works towards the goal of increased physical coordination and muscle development.  As the song speeds up for the ending chord, the child reaches into the air for a final cymbal crash– ending the song, and bringing a smile of accomplishment.
